One of the most underrated centers in NBA history

    6

Definitely, in the 98-99 season, he finished 2nd in MVP voting behind Karl Malone and won dpoy 2 years in a row.

    6

and yet i rarely hear him discussed amongst the top NBA centers of all time.

He's always mentioned as TOP10. If you meant higher, like TOP5 it's obvious, because he's not.

    1

But when I!m thinking about it, TOP10 is really generous, he was great, but there were too many awesome centers.

Kareem, Wilt, Russell, Shaq, Hakeem, Robinson, Walton, Moses Malone, McAdoo, Willis Reed, Cowens, Mikan ...all of them were MVP (well, Mikan isn't, bit he would ve if there was such thing) and are champions, it's very difficult to put Alonzo in front of them, when he doesn't have such accomplishmet. And I'm not talking about the ones like Dwight od Ewing...

Cowens and Walton were beasts man, both were very versatile players. Mikan's stats inflated? Dude, there was no shot clock in these days.

    -1

Alonzo was better than Russell and Mikan

    1

One have 11 rings and 5 MVP, second 5 rings and several rule changes had been made because of him. I can't see how Zo can be better...

    0

If we talking as individual players then zo is better. Russel had 7 hofers get him those rings. Rings are really a teammaccomplishment not a players

    0

Plus, everybody was shit before Mikan so that doesn't matter

    0

Doesn't matter, that before Mikan "everybody" was shit, great players would adapt to any era.

Yes Championship is team accomplishment, but without Russell there wouldn't be any Celtics dynasty as we know it. They would have probably half a rings and that's my point. He was real game changer and defensive anchor like nobody before or after him.

    0

A defensive anchor isn't better than Alonzo. Also, great players wouldn't adapt to any era, and that's a fact lmao. Do you think Oscar would average a trip dub now?

    0

No, man it's a fact, you can't change natural talent and with modern training methods the star players from past would be stars today. And that's a fact in any sport, or do you think Dan Marino won't be awesome nowadays? Pelé, Gretzky detto? You don't need same stats to be one of the best today, than in early sixties, because it's obvious Wilt won't average 50pts/game, but still he would be a TOP player.

Greatness should be always appreciated, Zo wasn't even TOP3 center and barely TOP15 player of the 90s. Not case of Russell in his era.

    -1

Smfh Russell and mikal weren't that great. Mikan would be a role player in today's NBA. He played against mediocre talent his whole career and would be demolished in things like pick and rolls defensively. Russell would get worse defensively with stretch bigs and pick and rolls that would really get him out of his comfort zone.

    What are you smoking?

    1. Do rebounds still matter in today's NBA? If not, talk to most PFs and Cs in todays NBA and I bet most coaches care plenty about rebounding.
    2. Against shit or not, Mikan was outstanding for his time. The stats prove why.
    3. It doesn't matter how the NBA/ABA was when they played, it's how good they did compared to players of their time.
    4. It's pretty hard to imagine a HOFer as a role player in any time period.

    0

    "Against shit or not" what
It does matter what time period they played in because rules change and so have pace which can inflate stats

    0

Yeah but then they would be trained differently

    0

What does that have to do with what I said lmao. Them being trained differently is just an excuse, and they could have been the better player with different training. Russell had pretty bad efficiency, and his rebounding was good mostly because the talent was worse and everyone was shorter

    0

    *athletic ability

    0

They were great in their era, if you put them in modern basketball, they would made adjusments starting in they school days.

You can't compare players skills or athletic in different eras (or you can, but it's basically wrong 'cause there was whole different approach to training, to nutrition etc. Ffs Johan Cruijff was smoking his whole career, George Best was alcoholic and they still have teared defenses apart in their days), only what you can compare are accomplishments (both team and individual) and greatness in their respective era and their impact on basketball as a whole.

    0

We are currently comparing players in different eras lmao

    0

But you are taking 90s against 60s Russell purely on athleticism and skillset. If he was raised in 50s and played in 60s, he would have much different skillset.

    0

    *90s Zo

    0

But it's almost a fact that players just weren't as skilled back then

    0

You still don't see the big picture, f.e. if Dirk was playing in the 60s he won't be such finese player, cause there was different training methods and different strategies in game.

    0

Listen I understand your point and it makes sense. What ur not getting is that there's wasn't nearly as much competition back then. Plus the rings don't matter that much cause he had such an op team to take him to the promise land. The competition thing applies for Mikan mainly.

    0

    He isn't always

    0

Yeah I should had better choice of words, "often" is better.

    0

He's always been in my top 5 centers.

    0

He will always be my favorite. (Username is why)
