No one understands basketball when they say that Bill Russell was trash. First of all, Bill played in the age of Wilt Chamberlain, the most dominant center of all time. When Wilt scored 100 points, no one was less than 6'2" on the opposing team. There was no shortage of height when either of them played. Russell revolutionized the game, he changed the way the entire game was played. He was incredibly athletic, which is what made him so good. He could guard any position on the court, making him one of the best defensive players to ever play the game. Offensively, he used his athleticism to jump higher than defenders and easily get buckets while also using a great hook to float the ball in the basket. If you watch clips of Bill Russell play, you would understand why he's one of the best players ever. Plus, he has 11 rings
im not saying he is trash but he had the greatest team ever surrounding him he only played wilt so many times since there was only so many good players its like the warriors vs the lakers could be an upset but probably not
the whole bill had 7 hofs is an overstatement. yeah he had hondo, sam jones, and cousy. but there are hofs that are inducted because of being a coach, or simply because they were on the team that won championships. wilt consistently had around 3 allstars every year he played, and sometimes had a better record than the celtics.
the reason they were the greatest team ever was because of bill.

I recognize he's not trash. He's just not top 10. He can be top 20 though.
He's also not better than Wilt, and I think that was even recognized back then. Yes, Bill won more MVP awards than Wilt, but strangely enough Wilt made much more All NBA First Teams. Given that Bill missed four NBA First Teams out of his 7 MVP seasons, I'm banking on that being a more accurate measure of how good people thought the player was.
there was a shortage of height as (excluding bill and wilt) only 2 players in the league were above 6'9
Also remember that Bill Russell much like your normal big buy (shoot, including me) lie about or slightly exaggerate their height (I'm 6'6 and a little over a third so I tell people i am almost 6'7"). Bill in his prime probably was 6'9"ish. Most of the big guys in the league were 6'8". That's one or two inchas difference. Which is a advantage but it's not as much as people make it out to be.
Sure but he did this vs trash
Bill would dominate in today's game. So would Wilt
Show 3 replies...Bill was mainly dominant for his defense, and today's offenses are so much more complicated that he'd be lost for a while most likely.
Without guys like Bill, Wilt, Mikan, etc. Our modem guys would likely not be the developed players they are, but no one before even the 70's would have much of a chance against modern players, people get better over time not worse, thats just how genetics work.
I mean Porzingis is a 7'3" PF that bombs 3's and runs like a sf.
LeBron James is a 6'8" locomotive that can play 4 positions.
Curry hits half court 3's like it's normal, and then there's the Greek Freak Giannis who just defys all basketball standards.
The old school deserve their credit for what they did, the new school deserves credit for what they're doing, and that's competing in an era where almost every team is a superteam and there's typically a handful of teams that are basically all Allstars or Olympic level players.
Forget pace and space, that's a very myopic and one dimensional approach, instead look at over all how much the NBA and it's players have changed.
I'm not settling for half a player. Shooting is hard enough out here. I don't need me dude hopping around on one leg too.
I know they tried to make it so the other player isnt in the photo but seriously? Half of him is gone lol
did anyone else get a duplicate away bulls jersey so are now unable to get this? im mad.
Bill Russell lookin' like the photograph where Marty McFly goes back to the future and failed...
Trashass most overrated player in NBA history. Inside C shooting 42% FG while averaging 20 ppg on 30 more possessions than in modern NBA.
He isn't even top 3 rebounder and top 3 defender of all time.
If you have Wilt and him same teams Wilt wins 13 rings
accurate rating
Chances are you just listened to what other people say and have no clue about his game and haven't seen any footage of how much of an athletic monster he was
no i can see the stats
Show 63 replies...Stats don't matter as much when you can be proven the greatest defender ever and a top 3 rebounder ever. Leading a team to 11 rings didn't come from being an average joe
not a top 3 rebounder or defender of all tmie
PLEASE JUST SHUT UP. Look up stats before you say something so incorrect and you just completely embarrass yourself infront of everyone. Bill Russell is number 2 all time rebounding and in case u look up top blockers in the NBA in the 50s they didnt record blocks. Also Bill had the same vertical as Wilt and finally before u blame it on the lack of height at the time, they were just as tall it was the shorter height of Wings and Guards that make ppl believe this
do you know what pace is
Pace is an argument for the offensive side of the ball in the era. Sure means more possession but he didnt score that much. Still there are 6'9 centers as well you see Ben Wallace (6'9), Willis Reed (6'9), recently Jokic, and even Wes Unseld who even after the game "changed" still averaged over 10 rebounds at 6'7. But rlly he took home over 10 rings against hard competition and he still was second behind wilt in rebounds. He still is considered a top defense man (and to consider him that with no blocks recorded at the time is absolutely amazing). And the height was the same as it is now.
pace accounts for every stat. more possessions = more misses = more rebounds. simple logic. hard competition? LMAO really? are you sutpid? and no. hes not the second best rebounder of all time. with adjusted stats he has around 14 rebounds a game. 95% of blocks you see on tape from bill are goaltends. stop listening to ESPN and do some research
DID U FORGET U IDIOT HE PLAYED THEN NOT NOW. WHY DO IDIOTS COMPARE PLAYERS TO NOW
did u forget he had a team full of hall of famers
Everyone needs help. Oh lets take away DRods championship on the Bulls, oh and Isiah Thomas, and Chaunceys, and 2015 Warriors
1996 Bulls - 2 besides rodman
IT - like 4
Curry - max 3-4
Bill Russell - 8
we done here
Most 10 year olds don't
No i disagree i believe yall are cuz ur assuming and trying to make an argument against a player bcuz u havent seen him play or u cant find tape or whatever. Meaning since u havent seen them u dont care about them. Which i can shift to Wilt who has more tape and thats why he is considered t1 but bill is removed from t3 altogether even tho Bill take more championships on him. If the pace mattered so much Wilt wont be number 1 on all these lists
Who's mans?
rodman, hakeem, drob > bill at defense.
This dude is on drugs
no its a fact. you dont even have footage of bill playing defenes yet you claim hes the greatest at it.
They didnt record blocks dude i swear someone give this dude his meds. They didnt record blocks bcuz they didnt record blocks. And there is still plenty of footage. He is also a top 3 rebounder please u heard me earlier just be quiet.
you do realize there was no goaltending in the 60s which made it easier to get blocks?
Im aware of it but when will y realize that he played in the 50s and 60s. He isnt a current player. So why r u giving him less rebounds and shit it makes no damn sense
can you stop mentioning the 60s every fucking sentence
Why do u feel u have to compare tho. Seriously?
because bill is overrated
UR AN IDIOT IM MEANTIONING IT BCUZ HE PLAYED THEN. WTF
mentioning it in every sentence isnt necessary
Blocks don't count either since he was like a foot and a half taller than his competition
Height of Centers:
Bill Russell C 6-9 (1/2)
Wilt Chamberlain C 7-1 (1/16)
Swede Halbrook C 7-3
Darrall Imhoff C 6-10
Ray Felix C 6-11
Wayne Yates C 6-8
Bevo Nordmann C 6-10
Walter Dukes C 7-0
Walt Bellamy C 6-11
1961-1962 Season, 9 active, avg = 6-11.06" (6-10.81" excluding Wilt)
1989-2011 NBA draft (sample size avail, 67) avg = 6-10.44"
It's true Rodman,Hakeem,DRob better defenders. Wilt,Hakeem,Moses are better rebounders
Lol ur so wrong cuz according to stats for rebounding Wilt is number 1, Bill Russell is number 2, and Kareem is number 3. None of the players u mentioned are even top 3. Also keep in mind in the 50s and 60s they didnt record blocks as a stat
(Besides wilt but thats a given)
There is something called pace+ 60s had most missed FGs per game=more rebounds+ I forgot Rodman who is better rebounder than Bill
Oh ok so since wilt played in the same era lets put DRod in front of him. Right? Right? Also lets take away all their rebounds cuz we know they actually didnt get them right? No they still put up these stats. They still were legends of their time like Lebron to us. You cant take away a players stats bcuz of the time he played in. Make any excuse
accurate rating, PLAYED WHEN nba was trash, LOnzo already bter than his por ass
I agree. Rebounding should be upgraded more and his dunk and layup should be lowered, but his rating shouldn't be much higher than 90ish
The 1 time I actually agree with something you said
The background makes him look like he has 3 arms
