98 OVR David Thompson Review

Written by ReviewsForThePeople

What's good everybody. This is ReviewsForThePeople and I am back again with another review of one of the relatively elite shooting guards in NBA 2K19 MyTeam, 98 overall pink diamond rewards David Thompson aka Skywalker. For everyone that doesn't know already, this card is the ultimate reward for going 12-0 in MyTeam Unlimited for the month of May. I was able to get this card and get some gameplay in so quickly because I already had an 11-0 record before today, so I only needed to win one game to get my hands on this David Thompson card. As always, I intend on keeping my reviews as high-quality and professional as possible. Today's review is based on 4 MyTeam Unlimited games and 4 Triple Threat Online games. I had to play more games than usual for this card because I wanted to see if he would truly fit in my lineup and he definitely did. However, he does have some weaknesses that can be seen as flaws and maybe even liabilities. I guess you guys will find out in today's review. I hope you guys enjoy.

Method of Obtaining: Going 12-0 in MyTeam Unlimited for the Month of May

Takeovers: As far as I know, his only two takeovers seem to be slashing and shot creating and this applies to any coach in NBA 2K19 MyTeam.

  • Extremely Quick: I was actually shocked by this card's incredible athleticism. He's got 97 speed and 94 speed with ball, along with 97 acceleration. To be honest with you, this is probably the fastest shooting guard that I have played with this year in NBA 2K19 MyTeam and his quickness actually makes this card usable on the offensive side of things, which leads me to his next strength.

  • Blow-By Animation: My, oh my. I was just talking about how his quickness leads to his offensive opportunities and this is definitely his best attribute. This card would be extremely useful for people that like to call for picks before crossing the half-court line because he would use his quickness and, believe it or not, his strength to get blow-by animations regularly. When he does contact dunk, he is a force to be reckoned with. However, he doesn't do that most of the time and that will be one of his weaknesses today.

  • Simple Dunk Animations: David Thompson is a very reliable finisher and the main reason for that would be that he sticks to a simple dunk package. The one thing that separates this card from a card like Vince Carter would be the fact that he typically doesn't get flashy to a point where the defense has a chance of catching up to him. As you guys can see, he has a 99 driving and contact dunk with 100 dunk tendencies. He also has hall of fame posterizer, acrobat, relentless finisher, and tireless scorer. These 4 hall of fame badges are key to have when you are an undersized slasher like David Thompson.

  • Overall Defensive Stud: David has proven to be a lockdown defender when I absolutely need him to be. If you are running him at the 1 or the 2 and you are matched up with somebody his size or similar to his size, David will probably put on the clamps for you. He's got a 94 on-ball defense IQ with 97 lateral quickness. He also has a 92 steal and pass perception, along with a 95 shot contest and a 92 block. He lives up to each of these stats, except for the block. You can't really expect this card to get chasedown blocks on bigger guards or forwards, considering the fact that he is only 6'4". In addition to those stats, he comes with hall of fame pick dodger and defensive stopper, which are definitely key badges to have when you have an undersized guard like David Thompson at this stage of the game.

  • Jumpshot Consistency (Only When It is Timed Right): I'm just going to say this right now. If you are not good with a sped-up base 9 jumper, you will probably never green a shot with this card. David's release is probably one of the quickest, if not the quickest release in NBA 2K19 MyTeam and this card will only be consistent from the field if his jumpshot is timed correctly and consistently. Despite having a 96 open shot mid and a 90 open shot three, mistiming his release will honestly make these stats irrelevant. He does not have a jumper like that of Kevin Durant where if you mistime it, there's still a large chance of the shot going in. If you mistime David's jumper, you probably won't even make it 1 or even 2 out of 10 times.

  • Undersized Slasher and Defender: When it comes to slashing, despite having simple contact dunk animations, David still tends to get blocked by the bigger defenders. Cards like the pink diamond Greg Oden or even the diamond Kristaps Porzingis would have a field day in terms of blocking David down low, so I would highly suggest not forcing the drive on the bigger defenders. In addition to slashing, his defense can be a bit suspect when going up against a bigger matchup. If you feel like you will get beat to the basket, try stealing the ball because his stealing rate is definitely efficient. If you are unsuccessful with getting the steal, the bigger matchup will most likely take advantage of the failed reach and blow right by David Thompson, due to the animation and his height.

  • Off-Dribble Shot Isn't Too Quick: In my experience, I haven't found his off-dribble shot to be too reliable. Despite having hall of fame difficult shots and a 96 off-dribble mid with an 88 off-dribble three, his release is actually quite slow. He doesn't get much separation on his moving shot either, so it can easily get lightly contested by someone his size and heavily contested by somebody bigger than him. All I'm saying is that you should not rely on his off-dribble shot when you are being clamped from getting to the basket or if you need a big shot in a clutch situation.

  • Release Timing (Make or Break): Like I said before, the way that you time his release is huge. This card will be a make or break card if you can't get his jumpshot on point. Nobody is saying to green 8 out of 10 threes that you take with him, but if you can't get a white animation with a followthrough, you are missing the shot 99.9% of the time. His moving shot is easier to time, but like I said, it's slow and hard to get off on bigger defenders.

Alternative Cards: I believe that a very similar card to the pink diamond David Thompson would be the pink diamond DeMar DeRozan. As far as I know, DeRozan has the better release, but he is slower and worse on defense. You can probably pick him up for around 20-30,000 MT. Another card that I would recommend that is a bit more expensive than the DeRozan is the pink diamond Clyde Drexler. Drexler also has a better release with better defense. However, he is much slower than David Thompson. You can probably pick him up for around 40-50,000 MT.

Is He Worth the Grind? In my opinion, I feel that this David Thompson card is definitely worth the grind to go 12-0 in MyTeam Unlimited. I am very accustomed to David Thompson cards in MyTeam and I am very good with his base 9 release, so he is very efficient for me on the court. At the end of the day, you are going 12-0 for a near galaxy opal guard with 12 hall of fame badges. You can't go wrong grinding for him just to have him coming off your bench. He would still be a force to be reckoned with. I absolutely love this card and if you guys have seen my recent lineup, you can see that I run him at point guard off the bench. I refuse to start him over my pink diamond Grant Hill because he is so much smaller and he would present a matchup disadvantage maybe 7 out of 10 games that I play in MyTeam Unlimited. I usually went up against the pink diamond Damian Lillard or the pink diamond Gary Payton when David came in off the bench and he did an incredible job playing defense and driving to the basket, along with hitting his open shots. If you figure out his jumpshot, his release will actually feel money and in my opinion, base 9 is one of the best releases in the game and it just takes some time to adapt to. So, bottom line, I believe that this card is definitely worth the grind. He will be my backup point guard for a relatively long time and I am glad that I was able to acquire him for my bench unit.
