Larry Johnson '01
96 Overall PD LJ Review
Written by ReviewsForThePeople
Good morning everybody. This is ReviewsForThePeople and today, I have another review for you guys and it is on the 96 overall pink diamond Larry Johnson. If you guys aren't aware, this is December's Player of the Month for going 12-0 in MyTeam Unlimited in NBA 2K19 MyTeam. It took me 2 tries, but I finally went 12-0 and I was fortunate enough to receive this card and get some gameplay. I have played a total of 5 MyTeam Unlimited Games and 4 Triple Threat Online games with this card and I am going to advise you to grind out MyTeam Unlimited for this card as soon as possible. This card is a must-cop for many reasons and in this review, I will show you exactly why this card is worth grinding for.
Bought for: Free (Player of the Month for MyTeam Unlimited)
Acquired for: Going 12-0 in MyTeam Unlimited
Outside Shooting (Jumper): Guys, I am going to tell you right now that Larry Johnson is one of the best shooters in the game. With a 95 open shot mid and a 91 open shot three, Larry has a tendency of making his shots more often than not. Don't forget that butter, easily timeable release that he possesses as well. I currently shoot 71% from the field and 66% from the three with this card in MyTeam Unlimited. My coach, which is diamond Steve Kerr, also gives a three-point boost to this card, so my LJ has a 96 open shot three, which is just something else.
Pick and Roll Maestro: Now, this one will probably come out as a shocker, but Larry Johnson is capable of somewhat facilitating the offense. I have a high success rate when it comes to calling a big-man pick-and-roll and he usually drives in and finishes an acrobatic layup or gets fouled. With a 92 draw foul and an 88 free throw, you can't go wrong calling for a big-man pick-and-roll once in a while. Although I would advise you not to call this consistently because at the end of the day, he is a big-man with only 71 ball control and any point guard with at least a 75 steal could do wonders defensively when it comes to stripping the ball away from him.
Post Scoring: I have had Larry Johnson cards since NBA 2K17 and every year that I have had him, his post fadeaway has been absolutely money. His fadeaway is relatively quick, yet fairly easy to time. He also has 95 strength, so it is quite easy to back down my matchup and I will tell you guys why in the next strength.
- I Put Him at the Small Forward Position: Guys, we all know that Larry Johnson is 6'7" and this year, rebounding is essential for winning games online. So, it would not be the best idea to run him at the power forward position. Let me give you guys a scenario here. Let's say you are going up against 94 overall diamond Carmelo Anthony and Larry Johnson is at the 3. Imagine putting Melo in the post with those post scoring stats. Imagine calling plays that can get Larry wide open for the catch and shoot. Imagine the contact dunks Larry would get on Melo's weak ass (pardon the French). So, my main point here is to run him at the small forward because he is not only equipped with the stats and badges to perform well at the small forward, but he also has the stats and badges to play in the post like a normal power forward, which creates a mismatch for your opponent 90% of the time.
Height: You guys knew this would be under weaknesses and I am here to tell you that it is a major weakness if you run Larry at the power forward position. He just can't get up off the ground to rebound anything at his natural position. I was outrebounded the one game that I put him at power forward 9 to 2 by diamond Kevin Durant. Believe me, his height makes him a major liability at the 4 spot.
Speed: Guys, I know his speed is okay for the power forward position, but it kinda is becoming a liability at the small forward as well. Let's take the scenario of the diamond Carmelo Anthony again. With 75 speed and 67 lateral quickness, please explain to me how Larry will catch up with Melo when Melo has 91 speed. Melo would kill him 9/10, if not 10/10 times on transition buckets, especially from three.
Not Much of a Dunker: I know what you're thinking. He has a 95 standing dunk and an 85 driving dunk. How can you say he's not much of a dunker? Well, he has a tendency of going for layups rather than dunks. In a situation where this is even a little bit of a contest, he goes for the most acrobatic layups ever, but if he's given even a shred of openness, he does indeed live up to his dunking stats. He's also killer when calling pick and rolls through him and throwing him lobs. He will probably catch it 7/10 times you throw it to him, so he is very efficient in that situation as well.
- Not the Best Defensively: I know I said running him at the small forward is the best way to go, but even then, he's not great in terms of staying in front of his man, but he is in no way a defensive liability. He does tend to get caught on screens a lot and a card like Melo or Kevin Durant would have a relatively easy time creating their own shots on him.
Recommended Strategy: "Try to call pick and fades through him as your primary offense with him, call for pick and rolls to throw lobs as well, call plays to get him open for easy catch and shoot threes, get him into the post-up to fadeaway on a small forward with not so great defense, use the post spin to your advantage as well"
Alternative Card: I guess if you guys want to just buy a card that plays like Larry Johnson, I would recommend picking up the 92 overall amethyst Draymond Green or the 92 overall amethyst Rashard Lewis. I'm sure both of these cards are under 15k MT at this point.
Use if: "You want a fairly athletic stretch that can dunk the ball when needed and play in the post efficiently to create mismatches for the opposing team"
Don't use if: "You don't need a small forward and you would like a taller power forward that can stretch the floor and rebound"
Bottom Line: "Personally, I feel like you can't go wrong with grinding out MyTeam Unlimited for this Larry Johnson card. In my experience, he has been nothing short of amazing for me at the small forward position and I intend on keeping him in my lineup for a pretty long time. I have to be honest though, if 2k comes out with a pink diamond Kevin Durant or LeBron James, this card is leaving the squad or at least being moved to the bench. Anyways, try your best everybody to earn this card in MyTeam Unlimited. Otherwise, try to buy the listed budget alternatives for this card."
